¹⁷ God heard the boy crying,^(A) and the angel of God^(B) called to Hagar from heaven^(C) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;^(D) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

⁷ The angel of the Lord^(A) found Hagar near a spring^(B) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.^{(C) 8} And he said, “Hagar,^(D) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”^(E)

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

⁹ Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” ¹⁰ The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”^(F)

¹¹ The angel of the Lord^(G) also said to her:

¹³ She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,^(N)” for she said, “I have now seen^[c] the One who sees me.”^(O)

¹⁷ So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,^(A) where he settled.

³³ He called it Shibah,^[a] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.^[b](A)

⁴² If the God of my father,^(A) the God of Abraham^(B) and the Fear of Isaac,^(C) had not been with me,^(D) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,^(E) and last night he rebuked you.^(F)”

⁷ The Lord said, “I have indeed seen^(A) the misery^(B) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned^(C) about their suffering.^(D)

⁸ So I have come down^(A) to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land,^(B) a land flowing with milk and honey^(C)—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites^(D) and Jebusites.^(E)

¹⁶ “Go, assemble the elders^(A) of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob^(B)—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen^(C) what has been done to you in Egypt.

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro^(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,^(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^(C) the mountain^(D) of God.
